Mechanical Sampling: Phoebe Porter at Craft ACT
Expanding on her innovative work combining industrial materials and processes with gold smithing, Phoebe Porter will be presenting a new series of contemporary jewellery pieces that explore tradition manual machining techniques that are fast becoming lost in our age of rapid prototyping and CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) production.
Graduating from a Bachelor of Arts (Gold and Silversmithing) at ANU School of Art in 2001, Phoebe went on to undertake a mentorship with one of Australia’s leading contemporary jewelers, Blanche Tilden. Since then she has exhibited work across the country, including Unfold (solo show) Craft Victoria 2012, Melbourne Now National Gallery of Victoria, 2013 and A Fine Possession Powerhouse Museum, 2013. Phoebe has exhibited in Germany, Japan and Taiwan. Her work has been acquired for several public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Powerhouse Museum. She has also received many awards including a Canberra Critics’ Circle Award, Victorian Premier’s Design Mark and grants from the Australia Council and Arts ACT.
