Nestled in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba is surrounded by vineyards, trout-filled streams and rolling cattle and sheep country. The town was born in the gold rush of the 1850s, and echoes of that era remain in its heritage buildings, including the historic Court House. In 1824, explorers Hume and Hovell passed through the region on their journey to Port Phillip. Today, you can follow part of their route along the Hume and Hovell Track, which traces Burra Creek and passes through a hand‑cut tunnel dating back to the gold‑mining days. Discover more of the region's pioneering past at the Tumbarumba Museum, located within the Visitor Information Centre. Alongside gold rush history, the museum features a permanent display on the Southern Cloud, an aircraft that vanished in 1931 and was not discovered until 1958. Just 18 kilometres from town, the spectacular Paddys River Falls offers a breathtaking natural escape. Wine lovers can enjoy tastings of Tumbarumba's award‑winning cool‑climate wines at cellar doors, while art and boutique shopping await at Artists on Parade Gallery, Forage Merchant and Occasions, and Twisted Willow Homestore. Tumbarumba's calendar is filled with vibrant annual events, including the New Year's Day Rodeo, the Tumbarumba Cup, and Tumbafest—the town's signature celebration of music, food and wine held annually each February.
