Cooma

Cooma is the largest town in the Snowy Mountains region and the gateway to New South Wales' alpine country. Ideally located between the mountains and the Monaro Plains, it is the perfect base for exploring the region's spectacular landscapes, rich heritage and year-round adventures. The region has been home to Aboriginal peoples for tens of thousands of years. Much of the Snowy Monaro is on Ngarigo Country, where culture, connection to Country and stories continue to be shared and celebrated by Ngarigo people. In 1949, Cooma became the headquarters of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, one of the world's greatest engineering achievements and Australia's largest post-war infrastructure project. More than 100,000 people from over 30 nations contributed to the scheme, shaping both the town and the nation. Discover this remarkable history at the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre. Cooma's heritage is equally impressive. Stroll the self-guided Lambie Town Walk to explore National Trust-classified buildings, including historic Victorian cottages, the courthouse, gaol and post office, each reflecting the town's pioneering past. For panoramic views across the Monaro Plains to the Snowy Mountains, head to Mount Gladstone Lookout. Cooma Monaro Railway Museum

The Cooma Monaro Railway is a Heritage Tourist Railway and Museum based in Cooma, New South Wales. Housed in the beautifully restored Cooma Railway Station, the 'Travel for Pleasure' exhibit tells the story of the golden age of railway travel in NSW and the Snowy Mountains while the restored station offers visitors the opportunity to step back in time and explore an operational Signal Box, Station Masters Office and Waiting Room. Take a walk around one of the last remaining complete railway yards in NSW and climb aboard our steam locomotive, 3203. Work is currently underway to return tourist trains to the rails with CPH Rail Motor shuttles to Snowy Junction before focusing on the restoration of tourist trains to Rock Flat, Nimmitabel and Bombala.
