What’s On for the 2021 Ski Season Opening Weekend?

Ski season opening weekend 2021 is looking good thanks to pre-winter snowfalls and sub-zero temperatures. Snow guns are firing in preparation for lifts to operate at Thredbo and Charlotte Pass, which will open for skiing and snowboarding from Saturday, June 12. Lifts in Perisher are already running.  Plenty of celebrations are planned right across the region for the Queen’s Birthday holiday. Keep reading to plan your long, wintry weekend in the Snowy Mountains!

Winter 2021 Opening Weekend, Thredbo

Kick of the season in style at Thredbo, June 12 – 14. Along with skiing and snowboarding, stacks of events are planned including dining, live entertainment, kids’ activities and more. World famous ice sculptor Kenji will be in the village designing his beautiful creations during the day while at night Thredbo will be lit up in brilliant colours by digital artist Scott Baker. Guests can head skywards on the Merritts Gondola to enjoy sunsets and sounds on the Merritts Deck. Plus, to top it all off, the season is set start with a bang thanks to fireworks on Saturday night.

2021 Ski Season Opening, Perisher

Skiers and snowboarders can take to the slopes plus, on Saturday night, Front Valley will light up with fireworks to celebrate the ski season opening weekend and you can also ski or board under the stars. There will be entertainment for the kids and adults can head to JAX bar for live music from midday. The Smiggins Hotel will also be pumping with live music from 3pm each day. Freeriders should check out Rail Rampage, a ski and snowboard progression session where they can compete to win epic prizes!

Snow Sale, Jindabyne

Update your ski or snowboard gear at the Jindabyne Snow Sale! This is a great opportunity to buy or sell your pre-loved snow equipment. Perfect for families who are just starting out in snow sports or for those who want to upgrade their gear. Located in the Memorial Hall, Jindabyne, the sale runs from 8am – 2pm on Saturday and 9am – 12pm on Sunday. You’ll also be helping to raise money for Action Sports Training, a community acrobatics facility based at Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre.

Yulefest 2021, Perisher

Celebrate winter the Viking way! Yulefest at Valhalla Perisher is a great opportunity to introduce yourself to winter in the Kosciuszko National Park. Enjoy a cosy alpine lodge with a warm, friendly, social vibe. Try snowshoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, orienteering, downhill skiing, ski touring and more.

Charity Fireworks Night, Bombala

The Bombala Motorcycle Association will be bringing a huge firework display to the skies above Apex Park, Bombala on Saturday 12 June. There will be plenty going on during the day too, with the local schools presenting an arts and crafts display and auction. There will also be face painting, jumping castle, local food and beverages and live music. It all kicks off at 2pm and proceeds go to Bravehearts charity.

Macenmist Truffle Hunt and Lunch, Bredbo

Macenmist Black Truffles and Wine, located just outside of Bredbo, will be celebrating the long weekend with a black Perigord truffle hunt followed by lunch as part of the Canberra Truffle Festival. The truffle dogs will be in attendance, making this a great opportunity to learn more about how truffles are grown and harvested. After the hunt, sit down to a three-course truffle luncheon in the beautiful rural surrounds. The perfect stop over on your way to the Snowy Mountains!

CMR Fresh Produce Markets, Cooma

The best destination in the Snowy Mountains to find fresh, local produce! These markets incorporate providers from all over the region including Ironpot Artesian Bakery, Curiosity Chocolates, Backa Gourmet Foods and much more. Plus, you’ll find a sausage sizzle, coffee and more all while inspecting the fully restored historic Cooma Monaro Railway Station.
